Shrimp are a great addition to your reef, invertebrate or fish only tank. They have a hard outer shell, thin muscular midsection, pinchers and antennae.
Shrimp are found worldwide in seafloors and coasts and can even be found in some freshwater areas such as lakes and rivers. While shrimp are omnivorous most feed off algae and other items they can scavenge for in your tank. Some are known as cleaner shrimp and will clean your rock of algae and parasites from your fish. Keep in mind that shrimp are usually considered food for most fish so you should be careful when adding more aggressive fish that may eat the shrimp.
High levels of nitrate and copper in your tank can be harmful to the Shrimp but adding iodine and other trace elements will help promote molting and growth. In your tank they will search for chunks of meaty food, algae, plankton and pretty much anything they can find to eat. You can supplement their diet with frozen and flake food.
