The Angelfish, found most commonly on shallow reefs of the tropical Atlantic, Indian and Western Pacific Oceans, have flashy and bright colors. Controlling the overgrowth of reef-building corals the standard Angelfish stays as close to the reef for safety. While semi-aggressive this fish keeps order and balance with its large size and gleaming array of coloration.
All species of Angelfish have preopercle spines on their gill covers, small mouths and many have thin streamer-like extensions from the dorsal and tail fins extending past their full body lengths.
Highly coveted with being a tank owners dream fish it gets along with many species of wrasses and clownfish but not so much with other Angelfish. Provide plenty of live rocks which have algae growing on them as well as rocks and caves for them to hide in.
They are omnivores and will feed on algae, plankton and vegetarian fish food. Some will eat squid, clams, and brine or mysis shrimp. If you want something huge and proud to show off then the Angelfish is for you.
