The Sand Star or the Sand Sifting Sea Star is a large starfish with a brown and tan striping all over its body. Keep them in a well-established tank that has a deep sand bed for the starfish to burrow in. They are nocturnal and will come out when your lights turn off to come out and sift through the sand looking for detritus and eaten food. They are reef compatible and should be kept with peaceful fish. Never keep hermit crabs, parasitic snails, or aggressive fish that can harm them in the same tank. Starfish are very picky when it comes to water parameters and will need to be drip line acclimated to your tank. Sudden changing in oxygen, salinity, and ph can greatly affect the starfish. High levels of nitrate and copper in your tank can be harmful to the Starfish but you can add other trace elements to keep them happy. They are constantly eating and should be fed supplemental food that includes meaty food, sea urchins, shrimp and crustaceans.
