The Black Ribbon Eel is also known as Blue Ribbon Eel. This eel goes through three stages of life- Juvenile, adult male and mature adult female. The juvenile eel will be a black with yellow ribbon fins. The adult male will be black with blue fins and when the eel is fully matured it will change from male to female and will be yellow. These eels can grow up to 36 inches long so a tank of around 50 gallons at minimum is recommended and make sure it’s covered with a tight lid because they like to try and escape. Provide a sandy bottom with hiding places like rocks, caves and pipes. It is a sociable eel but should only be kept in a fish only tank with fish that are larger than its mouth. Don’t keep smaller invertebrates and corals in the tank with the eel. They are often seen with their mouth wide open, which gives them an aggressive look when in reality this is just how they breathe. When feeding we recommend using tongs because they have bad eyesight and can accidently bite your fingers instead of the food. Their diet should consist of live feeder shrimp in the beginning and with time you can begin feeding frozen krill and shrimp.
