The Red Knobby Sea Star is also known as the Red Spine Star, or African Sea Star. It has a tan or grey body with bright red protrusions all over its body connected with red lines. Keep them in a well-established tank that has live rock with algae growing on it. As juveniles they will mainly eat algae but as they mature the adults are known to eat soft corals, sponges, starfish, tubeworms and other invertebrates so they are not reef compatible. They are peaceful and should be kept with other peaceful fish and invertebrates that wont pick on them or eat them. Starfish are very picky when it comes to water parameters and will need to be drip line acclimated to your tank. Sudden changing in oxygen, salinity, and ph can greatly affect the starfish. High levels of nitrate and copper in your tank can be harmful to the Starfish but you can add other trace elements to keep them happy. You can supplement their diet with clam, shrimp and squid.
