The Volitan Lionfish is also known as the Red Lionfish, Common Lionfish, or the Turkeyfish. When you think of a Lionfish this is the one most people will imagine. They are very durable fish and can live a long time. The color of the fish all depends on the age and maturity of the fish. They can be red to burgundy, white, brown and black. They usually have brown to black vertical stripes along their body. The pectoral fins look like a fan and the dorsal fins are tall and look like feathers. Most important thing you need to know about this fish is that it is VENOMOUS! Never touch a lionfish and always make sure you use a net or scoop to handle them. They wont attack you but their large fins can easily sting you. If you do get stung just rinse the affected area with really hot water and seek medical attention if it worsens. The Volitan Lionfish should be kept in a 75 gallon tank or larger with plenty of open space and many places to hide in. It will hide in caves and shady places in the beginning but as it becomes acclimated to the tank you will see it in open water. They are rapidly growing fish and can grow up to 15 inches. When you first put the Volitan Lionfish in your tank you can get it to eat by adding in smaller fish or feeder shrimp. Once they are settled in and acclimated to your tank you can start including chunks of shrimp, frozen silversides and pieces of frozen squid. The Zebra Lionfish should only be fed twice a week to keep it from growing to fast. The bigger the lionfish the more of a threat it is to any other fish in your tank.
